WHY BACKUP POWER MATTERS

Las Vegas Has Unique Power Risks — Here’s the Reality

Nevada’s extreme climate and growing grid demand mean outages happen — often at the worst possible times. A backup power plan isn’t a luxury. For many Las Vegas families, it’s a safety essential. Learn more in our electrical safety articles.

Deadly Summer Heat

Las Vegas is one of the hottest cities in the United States, and losing power during a heat wave can be life-threatening. In 2024, Clark County recorded 526 heat-associated deaths — a 73% increase over the year prior — with the majority occurring in July, when temperatures routinely exceed 110°F. Unlike most cities, where a few hours without AC is uncomfortable, in Las Vegas it can be life-threatening — for children, elderly residents, and pets especially. Without AC, interior home temperatures can climb to dangerous levels within one to two hours during peak summer heat. When the grid fails during a heat wave, having a backup power source for your air conditioning isn’t a convenience. It’s a lifeline.

Grid Strain & Rolling Outages

Las Vegas homes consume nearly double the national average in electricity during summer months — regularly exceeding 1,500 kWh/month compared to 877 kWh nationally — largely because air conditioning runs at full capacity for months at a time. That surge in demand strains the NV Energy grid hardest in the late afternoon and evening hours, exactly when homes need power most. When the system is stretched beyond safe thresholds, rolling outages occur to prevent larger grid failures. NV Energy serves 2.4 million customers across Nevada, and when the western power grid experiences stress, the entire state is exposed. In July 2025 alone, a single storm event left more than 16,000 Las Vegas Valley customers without power simultaneously. Surge protection is your first line of defense.

Monsoon Storm Season

From July through September, Las Vegas enters monsoon season — and the storms that arrive are more destructive to the electrical grid than many residents realize. In the summer of 2024, a single severe windstorm caused by a “virga bomb” — a dry microburst where cooled air plunges violently to the ground — knocked out power to over 33,000 NV Energy customers, damaged nearly 50 power poles, and took out 14 traffic signals across Clark County. In July 2025, 59 simultaneous outages affected more than 16,000 customers in a single afternoon storm event. These events arrive fast, with little warning, and restoration can take hours or, in serious cases, days. Read our storm-season electrical safety tips.

Medical Equipment at Home

If anyone in your household depends on powered medical equipment, a power outage isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a medical emergency. Oxygen concentrators draw 300 to 600 watts and must run continuously. CPAP and BiPAP machines run 7 to 8 hours every night. Ventilators cannot tolerate even a brief interruption without serious risk to the patient. The American Lung Association recommends every home oxygen user maintain a written emergency power plan, including backup oxygen cylinders sufficient for 24 to 48 hours of use. NV Energy also offers a medical priority list for customers who depend on power for life-sustaining equipment — a critical but underused resource. Having a whole-home backup power solution is the most reliable way to protect someone in your household who cannot safely go without electricity. Contact us
